Republican Mayor of Colorado Springs Lionel Rivera, has been rumored to be looking into a run for El Paso County Commissioner. Rivera was elected Mayor first in 2003, and again in 2007. He was the first Hispanic Vice Mayor and Mayor of Colorado Springs. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2006. Rivera is very popular and would be a serious contender if he decided to run.
El Paso is a Republican stronghold that voted 59% for McCain and 39% for Obama in 2008. The democrats have little chance of winning this seat, so whoever wins the Republican primary is very likely to win the general election.
